Open Cockpit Biplane Charter Flights: Los Angeles to Catalina

Fly in our beautiful 1935 Waco Classic biplane to the most romantic destinations witWaco Biplane Charter Flights Los Angeles hin a few hours of the heart of Los Angeles. Skip the TSA and the long lines at LAX and come fly with us the way flying  used to be. Luxurious with a touch of romance and adventure. You will be transported back in  time to when flying was a wonder and a joy to behold.

Imagine arriving in style in our 1996 Waco biplane that is still being made in the USA as a modern aircraft in Michigan.  It’s hand made from scratch and is literally the most expensive and exotic biplane in the world.  The brand new ones often sell for over $600,000. This is the Lear Jet or Gulf Stream of the 1930s.  Flying at 80-100 MPH at 1,000 feet or less above the surface of the Earth, you will be able to see the fine details of the landscape below.  You will see things you have never seen or noticed from a plane before because everything is  up close and personal.  You will feel the wind on your face, smell the salty air of the Pacific Ocean and  the sweet smell of the flowers on the hillsides. You may even feel the cool moisture and temperature of the air drop as you gently fly by the puffy white billowing clouds hanging in the air like cotton balls.  Upon arrival at your destination, you will have not only arrived in style, but you will have experienced something few people ever have done. Flying in an open cockpit biplane with the person you love by your side is an experience everyone should try at least once in their ifetime. It’s definitely one the most amazing things to do and is on most everyone’s “Bucket List.” If you would like to try something even more incredible…try it at night. You will not believe your eyes. See up to 3 sunsets in one flight…Yes. Really.Waco YMF-5 with Pilot Michael Blackstone

What Does Positive “G-Force” Do To A Pilot?

Centrifuge Positive G-Force is centrifugal forces acting on you, the pilot, and your aircraft, while moving together through the sky in a given direction and  then you suddenly and strongly pull back on the the control stick straight aft, creating a massive amount of lift from the top of the wings. This rapid rate of change in the  the amount lift being generated results in  a violent high G-onset and  a rapid rate of directional or heading rate of change.  This huge increase in the turn performance  of an aircraft that is traveling at high speed then asked to turn a fast tight circle  causing the occupants of  these high performance aircraft to feel the punishing effect of G-Force, or centrifugal force,  pushing you down into the seat.

The sensation is that of a person your equal size and weight sitting on your lap at 2 Gs or 2 times the normal body weight . It’s very much the force that holds the water in the bottom of a bucket as you swing it around in a circle like a Ferris wheel. Depending on the speed that you and your aircraft were traveling at the moment you pulled back on the stick and the rate at which you pulled (the quicker the pull; the higher the G-Force) will determine how many Positive G’s you and your aircraft will experience.  The higher the speed,  the higher the potential G-Force capability will be.  The more abrupt the pull, the more punishing the G-Force experience will be.

So what happens to you, the pilot, when all this takes place?  Here’s how it works. Pulling Gs is like power lifting at the gym. If you are about to lift 5-9 times your body weight you would have to do to get your body ready for a strenuous and extreme lift like that.  If you don’t get your heart pumping by taking a few big and quick breaths to get your blood pressure up in anticipation of this very strenuous task, the blood pressure in your body most likely will not be sufficient to perform the lift.  After you have attempted it, you will probably feel a bit weak, dizzy, queasy, light-headed and you might even feel like you might pass out. This is exactly what it feels like when you don’t tense up soon enough or strong enough prior to pulling a  back on the stick from high speed and sustain high G-Forces in an airplane. Taking several deep breaths, and then simultaneous tensing and holding your stomach muscles (like someone is about to punch you in the stomach), tightening your leg muscles and your neck muscles and straining enough to turn your face red, will dramatically improve your  G-Tolerance and minimize our your chances of  a G-LOC or G-Induced Loss of Consciousness event.  This is a very crucial habit to get yourself into as you learn to fly.  It is a matter of life and death for all fighter pilots and  airshow performers around the world who fly aircraft that are capable of pulling 6-12 Gs instantly.

If the G-Forces come on quickly enough, are strong enough (anything over 3.5 Gs can do it ) and sustained long enough the pilot must perform the above mentioned physical preparation maneuver. The US Navy calls it the “HOOK” maneuver.  As the blood in your head, which is vital to you keeping your conscious, is drawn down from the upper part of your body to your lower half,  during the next 3-7 seconds,  you will begin to suffer from the effects of “graying out” which is your first sign that you are now behind in your battle to remain conscious. You must have either forgotten to tense up your body, or didn’t tense up soon enough, or held it strong enough before the onset and for the duration of the the high G-Force event, which is the best way fight off the affects of the G-Forces.

You will then begin to see the “tunnel vision” effect setting in where your peripheral vision will fade out and you will only be able to see straight ahead. Then if you don’t tense up really hard and/or relax some of the back pressure on the stick, to relieve you of some of the G-Forces, you will be well on your way to “blacking out” or G-LOCing yourself. Once the tunnel vision is allowed to manifest itself, you will then see the “Black Curtain” come down you are very close to actually “blacking out” at this point. You can still think and hear but you cannot see. This is your final warning sign that unconsciousness is near. If this final symptom is ignored, you, the pilot will become unconscious and you could remain asleep for up to 30 seconds. This could be very bad if you are in close proximity to the ground and you are alone as in a fighter or air show stunt plane.

Learning  your G-Limits, honoring  your warning signs and when in doubt, by relaxing the back pressure on the stick and/or tensing up your stomach muscles as soon as you realize that you are about to pull some Gs, will always put you 1 step ahead of the effects of the G-forces at all times. G-Force Explained

G-Force is a unit of measurement of the loads we and our aircraft experience while maneuvering our aircraft aggressively or abruptly. It’s technically centrifugal force pushing us straight down into our seats like the water at the bottom of a bucket when you swing it in a circle vertically over your head. It’s how we measure this force relative to units of Gravity we feel here on Earth. For example, we in the US, like to measure things in pounds, so a person who weighs 100 pounds standing here on Earth would feel like they weigh 200 pounds when they put their aircraft into a dive and pull back on the stick and reach 2 G’s. When they go even faster in a dive and then pull really hard back on the control stick of the aircraft, rapidly changing the aircraft’s direction, reaching 6 Gs, that same 100 pound person would feel like they weigh 600 pounds. The aircraft’s structure is also being exposed to these load factors and, as a certified aerobatic aircraft, they must be able to withstand up to 9 Gs or 1.5 times the design limit.

AIR COMBAT 2 Versus 1 (2 MARCHETTI SF260s AGAINGST 1 EXTRA 300L)

SkyThrills is now offering for the first time ever, a real 2 versus 1 combat simulation. This is as close to real world aerial combat as you can get! Imagine, you and 2 buddies, suit up in military flight gear, and take to the skies above Los Angeles in real fighters to find out who the best fighter pilot is. Will the 2 faster Marchetti SF-260s, working as a team, be able to beat a single more nimble more capable Extra 300L in an all out air-to-air combat scenerio? Here’s how it works. A single Marchetti by itself should not be able to beat the Extra 300L in a 1 versus 1 engagement. The performance differences are significant enough, especially during horizontal to nose low high G turns. The Extra 300L simply will out turn the Marchetti with its higher turn rate, higher G capability and more powerful engine.  As a result, the Extra 300L should be able to maintain a higher energy state, bleeding less energy during the engagement, and when flown properly should pummel the Marchetti. The effective turn rate of the Extra 300L is significantly faster (up to 10 degrees per second faster) and since it bleeds its speed at a slower rate should have more energy to use to finish off the Marchetti in a horizontal encounter once the offensive position is established and maintained.  But when 2 Marchettis are teamed up, this aircraft performance advantage is significantly degraded and the Extra 300L must to be flown perfectly just to survive the attack of 2 Marchettis. He will be lucky to get a shot off at all while the 2 Marchettis take turns bleeding down the energy of the Extra 300L. And distracting him long enough t be shot down by the  second Marchetti he has lost track of during the engagement. This is a very dynamic environment and we will teach you all about the tactics of 2 versus 1 dissimilar aircraft engagements, here at SkyThrills!

Classic Aircraft

Our Pitts S-2C is a new aircraft design that has evolved from humble beginnings dating back to the 1940s. It was designed and built by Curtis Pitts and has become an icon of aerobatics since the very beginning.  This amazing biplane design has won more competitions and been in more air shows worldwide than all other aerobatic aircraft types combined. It is best know for its ridiculous climb performance, its crisp fingertip handling and wonderful stick centering characteristics, its perfect upright and inverted flat spins, and its unfair bad rap for being the most difficult aircraft in the world to land.  This aircraft is 100% handmade by a small company called Aviat Aircraft located in Afton, WY. This is a very special aircraft and it is made by a very special group of people who build each aircraft from scratch and have been doing so for over 30 years.  The new Pitts S-2C has been redesigned to be much stronger than its predecessors, now certified to (+6/-5 Gs) giving the new S-2C far better negative G capability than any other Pitts or any biplane in the world for that matter.  The new “C” now has a 15 mph faster cruise speed than its predecessors, 160+ mph, with its redesigned sleeker windscreen. Its top speed is still a blazing 212 mph! It’s ailerons been enlarged, giving the aircraft a much quicker roll rate, now over 300°/second.  Since its “spades” were removed from under the wings, the S-2C has a wonderfully balanced and solid feel in the pilot’s hand. In other words,  pitch and roll authority are equal and it rolls with the same rate and feel as the elevator provides. The older Pitts Specials took way more pressure on the elevator (up/down) than it took in the roll (left/right) which felt unbalanced. The rudder and elevator were also enlarged, making both much more effective and precise with enhanced rudder and elevator authority and a better feel. The landing gear were also modified making the S-2C the best behaved Pitts ever made. It’s landing characteristics are quick, responsive and positive throughout the entire landing event, with a much more tame runway personality. The biggest and best propeller on the market was installed on the S-2C. It’s huge 76″ Hartzell 3 bladed composite propeller, retailing for $45,000 from the factory, was added and dramatically enhanced the performance of the S-2C.  Pilots who fly with this prop are the envy of everyone who wishes they had what has been affectionately dubbed  “The Claw” for its incredible “hang time” capability in the vertical. It makes the S-2C almost hover! All in all, this is the best certified aerobatic biplane in existence.  The S-2C is the best Pitts Special ever made, and one can be had for a mere $250,000 brand new. The Pitts S-2C is the only FAA certified, production aerobatic aircraft still made in the USA today. Ours has a freshly overhauled 260 HP Lycoming 540 engine and prop. Our S-2C left the factory floor in 1998 as the 3rd one ever made. It has all the bells and whistles installed including a factory smoke system, that gives the pilot a sense of height, speed, and trajectory which makes flying the Pitts S-2C that much more fun to fly.  We also have installed a custom, FAA approved, state-of-the-art, multi-digital camera system to record your flying adventures.  You won’t find a finer Pitts Special being used for extreme, hands-on, aerobatic thrill rides anywhere else in the world. Even if you have never flown before, you are sure to appreciate the world-class performance we offer you in our Pitts S-2C aircraft. Aviat Aircaft

Our Extra 300L is also a new design incorporating the latest innovations in modern aircraft manufacturing. This aircraft, designed and built by Walter Extra in Germany, was invented in the 1980s and was cutting edge at the time. As time went on, the monoplanes began to dominate the aerobatic world and have become the industry standard for speed, performance and light weight ultra-strong aircraft. It is primarily constructed of a steel alloy fuselage, like a racecar roll cage, and everything else is constructed of high strength carbon fiber, like Formula I race cars, jets and spacecraft. The Extra 300L is by far, the best, certified, unlimited aerobatic monoplane in existence. With its huge 300 HP Lycoming 540 engine, its clean aerodynamic shape that allows it to go to speeds up to 250 mph, its ultra-light stick forces, lightning quick roll rate of over 400°/second, its unparalleled +10/-10 G FAA certification, its amazing visibility, and its tame landing characteristics and runway manners made this aircraft the best most capable aerobatic sport plane ever made. It is also outfitted with a state-of-the-art multi-camera digital camera system to record your flying adventures. You won’t believe how much fun it is to fly an aircraft that is more like a Formula I race car than a plane. The Extra 300L can be purchased from the factory in Germany, imported into the USA, and had for $370,000. You won’t find a finer aircraft in the world than our Extra 300L, being used for extreme thrill rides anywhere. So, even if you have never flown before, you are sure to appreciate this world-class, unlimited aerobatic champion, the Extra 300L. Extra Aircraft

Our SIAI Marchetti SF-260 is a modern current production Fighter/Trainer that was originally designed by Stelio Frati in the early 1060s and flew its maiden flight in July 1964.  It is now and built in Italy by a company called Aermacchi and sells for approximately $900,000 reasonably equipped. This aircraft is made almost entirely of 2024 aluminum, tipping the scales at 1,500 pounds empty and 2,430 pounds fully loaded.  It’s primary mission is to fly as a front line close air support air to ground fighter/attack aircraft. The “W” Warrior model and some “C”and “D”models of the aircraft are  equipped with 2 external pylons. These standard 14″ on center stores are capable of deploying a wide range of air to ground weapons.  The SF-260 can carry these and many other weapons under each wing:  2, 250 pound bombs, 2, 1.75 inch rockets pods with 6 under each wing , 2, 7.62mm cannon pods, or 2, 5o gallon external fuel tanks. The SF-260 is best known for its balanced, fingertip handling and its jet-like flying characteristics due to its very thin wings that give the aircraft its unusually high cruise speed, 160 knots at sea level, and its unusually high-wing loading. The dihedral in its wings of approximately 3 degrees helps stabilize the aircraft especially at high speed making the aircraft an excellent air-to-air and air-to-ground weapons platform.  This stability also makes the Marchetti an excellent formation machine and a solid and stable instrument flying aircraft at night and in the weather. The Marchetti is very strong, has a +6/-3 G aerobatic type certificate from the FAA and has been flown for many years as a combat aircraft by some 40 countries around the world. There are over 860 SF-260 operating around the world, 180 are in civilian hands and we have 9 of them here at Air Combat USA/ SkyThrills!

All of our aircraft are hangared and meticulously maintained by our full time staff of mechanics.

Welcome to SkyThrills!

Pitts S-2C

SkyThrills is the brainchild of Michael “Rocket” Blackstone, who began flying thrill seekers like himself in his first extreme aircraft, the Pitts S-2C, in 1999. Since then, he has added 3 more plane types including the Waco YMF-5, the Extra 300L and Marchetti SF-260 to the flight line. The SkyThrills concept was born while blending hand’s on extreme stunt flying, like the stuff you see at air shows, using competition aerobatics for inspiration, using ultra high-performance aerobatic aircraft and his 20 years of experience teaching acro mixed together with thoughts of the most insane roller coasters on the planet. What is the end result? A thrill ride company specializing in hand’s on, mild-to-wild, choose-your-own-adventure, high octane thrill rides at speeds up to 270 MPH! The riders experience up to +8/-8 times the force of gravity, while performing hand’s on aerobatics in 4 of the best aerobatic stunt planes on Earth. The flights take place high above the Pacific Ocean just off the coast of Los Angeles, CA with you at the controls for up to 90% of the flight time. The best part is that you don’t even have to have a pilot’s license to take part in a SkyThrills flying adventure. Pitts S-2C

"Pitts S-2C Performing a Hammerhead"

If you are ready to fly the world’s finest aerobatic biplane you have come to the right place. This aircraft, made by hand in Afton Wyoming, retails for $250,000 brand new and flies just as well as it looks. It has newly redesigned and strengthened wings making it a stronger (+6/-5Gs) and safer aircraft than earlier “A” and “B” models. It’s entire tail section has been redesigned to give it more rudder authority and better and more precise elevator feel as it performs high-G inside and outside maneuvers. It’s landing gear has been redesigned to make the “C” a better behaved machine on the runway. Its canopy and windscreen has been redesigned to make it cleaner and faster in flight resulting in a 10 knot speed increase over earlier models. Also added is the incredible Hartzell 3 blade composite “Claw” propeller which adds 40K to the price of this aircraft and makes it almost unstoppable on the pure vertical line. The 260HP Lycoming 540cc engine is awesome considering the Pitts only weighs 1200 lbs empty and grosses out at only 1700 lbs. Can anyone say thrust to weight ratio? This machine is nothing short of stunning. You will be at the controls of this extremely nimble, brutally powerful, and amazingly light flying machine. Let’s go flying. You won’t believe how much fun this aircraft is to fly. We have been flying this plane for a decade now and everyone who flies it has nearly 1,000 hours of Pitts time. It’s not our first day in the Pitts. You will be absolutely safe and totally thrilled in this aircraft with our highly trained and 20 year instructor pilot coaching you every step of the way.
